The problem
Estimating a shipping cost is easy. Getting it right is hard.
Rate cards and calculators give you a starting point. But the cost that appears on a carrier invoice often looks different — sometimes by a lot. The gap between estimated and billed cost is where companies lose money.
Rate calculators estimate base cost but ignore surcharges, accessorials, and zone corrections that appear on invoices.
DIM weight pricing means the cost depends on package dimensions, not just actual weight — and carriers often measure differently.
Fuel surcharges, residential fees, and peak season adjustments change weekly or monthly and are rarely reflected in calculators.
The address on file may trigger address correction fees, delivery area surcharges, or residential reclassification.
Promotional rates, volume tiers, and contract pricing create a gap between published rates and your negotiated rates.
How it works
What drives the cost of a shipment
Every shipping cost is the sum of multiple components. Understanding each one is the first step toward controlling your spend.
Base rate
The published or negotiated rate for a given service level, weight, and zone. This is the starting point of every shipping charge.
DIM weight
Carriers calculate dimensional weight from package length, width, and height. If DIM weight exceeds actual weight, you pay the higher rate.
Fuel surcharge
A percentage added to the base rate that fluctuates with fuel prices. Updated weekly or monthly by major carriers.
Residential surcharge
An additional fee for deliveries to residential addresses. Carriers determine residential classification, which can differ from your records.
Accessorials
Additional charges for services like signature confirmation, address correction, Saturday delivery, or hazardous materials handling.
- Address correction fees
- Saturday or extended delivery
- Signature confirmation
- Large package surcharge
Peak surcharges
Seasonal surcharges applied during high-volume periods like holiday shipping season. These can add $1–$6 per package.
